Heavy security at Orissa churches, temples

Bhubaneswar: Armed policemen have been deployed at several churches, major temples and other religious establishments in Orissa as authorities and many Christians apprehend trouble during Christmas in the state that witnessed widespread communal violence in recent months.
“We have posted armed policemen at all major churches across the state. Policemen have also been deployed at Hindu religious places like the Jagannath Temple and the Sankaracharya Math in Puri,” a state home department official said on Tuesday.
US pressurises Pak to address India’s concerns
Islamabad: Undertaking a visit as tension escalates between India and Pakistan, the top US military official has asked Islamabad to do more to address India’s concerns and reportedly sought commitments from Pakistani leadership on New Delhi’s demands.
On a second visit to Pakistan since the Mumbai Terror attacks, Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, is believed to have stressed on the need for Islamabad to do more to address India’s concerns, including action against elements linked to the Nov 26 strikes during his meetings with the country’s top military leadership on Monday.
Pak Army regular arrested as major terror plot unfurled
Srinagar, Dec 23: A major terror conspiracy was foiled in J&K with the arrest of three on Tuesday.
The suspected terrorists belong to the Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit and all of them reportedly hail from Pakistan. One of the arrested is a regular soldier in the Pakistan Army.
The state Director General of Police Kuldeep Khuda told the press that the serving Pakistani Armyman is Ghulam Farid alias Gulshan Kumar, a sepoy in 10 Azad Kashmir regiment.
Pak will respond immediately if India strikes: Kayani
Islamabad: Pakistan’s armed forces will mount an equal response “within minutes” if India carries out any surgical strike inside the country, army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has reportedly assured the nation’s leadership.
During a meeting at the presidency in Islamabad, Kayani informed President Asif Ali Zardari about the operational preparedness of the military in the face of mounting tensions with India in the wake of the Mumbai Terror attacks.
The armed forces were “fully prepared to meet any “eventuality” and the “men are ready to (make a) sacrifice for their country”, Kayani was quoted as saying by pro-establishment ‘The News’ daily.

The hog, trapped in a sty after the 7.9 magnitude quake, was bought by a local businessman who was moved by its ordeal and named ‘Zhu Jianqiang’, or ‘Strong Pig’. It survived by eating charcoal and drinking rainwater.
